Everyone knows the infamous Carlo Gesualdo da Venosa: prince, composer, and murderer. Rage and jealousy drove him to murder his unfaithful wife and her lover, which then caused great darkness and solitude in the latter half of his life. This anguish is reflected in his exotic, rule-breaking polyphony, displayed aptly in his 1603 setting of O vos omnes and a sombre rendering of the Miserere. Igor Stravinsky greatly admired Gesualdo and, for the 400th anniversary of his birth, completed three of Gesualdo’s previously unfinished motets. According to Robert Craft: "What he has done is to recompose the whole from the point of view of his added parts, with a result that is not pure Gesualdo, but a fusion of the two composers."
You are kindly asked to purchase your own copy of the Stravinsky. You will be provided with PDF copies of the Gesualdo by email once your booking has been received. You may print these at home at no further cost, or order a hard copy to receive on the day (£4). Please make your choice below.
No refunds will be available for any reason (including illness) for cancellations received ten days or fewer before the workshop. Workshop places are limited and, in the event of a client asking to cancel their place, refunds can only be offered if there is a waiting list for the relevant voice-part, and another client from the waiting list accepts the place.
