The Crucifixus Trilogy
CHAMBER WEEKENDER
21st-23rd February 2025
St Barnabas Church, Pimlico, London SW1W 8PF
Directed by Scott Inglis-Kidger
The Crucifixus section of the Nicene Creed, which describes Christ’s passion and resurrection, could arguably be considered one of the most important texts in the sacred canon. Antonio Lotti (1667-1740) clearly thought so, as he set the text at least three times: once for six voices, once for eight and once for ten (there is also thought to be a 5-part setting!) Lotti was born in Venice, and spent the majority of his life working in the church. In 1736 he was appointed Maestro di Capella at St Mark’s Basilica. However, he produced the most famous setting (for eight voices) during his time composing in Dresden, when he was mainly writing opera. The work begins in a dramatic, possibly operatic manner, with suspensions piled upon suspensions. They render it hugely affecting and intense. Alongside the trilogy of Crucifixus settings, we will sing Lotti’s setting of Ad Dominum cum tribularer, as well as the Salve Regina by his Venetian forebear, Francesco Cavalli.
