Following in the footsteps of William Byrd, Orlando Gibbons (1583-1625) was a pioneer in the English verse anthem, greatly influencing English composers that came after him. Join us to enjoy both the soloistic and consort aspects of six of his finest anthems. We will sing Out of the Deep (Psalm 130), a solemn supplication. See, See, the Word is Incarnate celebrates the Nativity with vibrant contrasts between solo voices and the full choir. In Blessed Are All They (Psalm 128), Gibbons finds a luminous, pastoral quality. Lift Up Your Heads (Psalm 24) resounds with the triumphant spirit of Christ’s ascension. O Lord, in Thy Wrath (Psalm 6) is a heartfelt plea, marked by its dramatic shifts and profound introspection. Finally, Hosanna to the Son of David exudes jubilant energy. Together, these anthems remain treasures of sacred music.
