Sweetest Breaths: Monteverdi & Strozzi
CHAMBER WEEKENDER
23rd-25th May 2025
St Barnabas Church, Pimlico, London SW1W 8PF
Directed by Scott Inglis-Kidger
This Chamber Weekender will marry the sacred (Monteverdi Beatus Vir) with the profane (Strozzi Silentio nocivo); two sublime works, exploring rather different subject matter! In his setting of Psalm 112, Claudio Monteverdi (1567-1643) created an exultant celebration of faith, filled with textural interest, antiphonal movement and soloistic lines. In contrast, Barbara Strozzi (1619-1677) sets a passionate text entitled ‘Harmful silence’, written by her adoptive father, poet and librettist Giulio Strozzi (1583-1652). The libretto describes the importance of communication and loving words in relationships (‘The sweetest breaths of our hearts, Lovers, are our affectionate words and songs’), which Strozzi underlines through her exquisite dissonances and delicate ornamentation.
