Pergolesi: Stabat Mater
CHAMBER WEEKENDER
11th-13th July 2025
St Barnabas Church, Pimlico, London SW1W 8PF
Directed by Scott Inglis-Kidger
Join us for our first upper voices Chamber Weekender, where we will explore Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater, in its original setting for two vocal lines. This exquisite, haunting rendering of the Marian hymn captures Mary’s deep sorrow at the foot of the cross. Giovanni Battista Pergolesi (1710–1736) composed this masterwork shortly before his death at the age of 26. Pergolesi’s untimely demise in 1736 seemingly added a mythology and romanticism to his music, which helped this work establish itself firmly in the canon. Under Scott’s expert guidance, we’ll delve into the emotional depth and delicate interplay of the vocal lines, with time to focus on both singing technique and stylistic interpretation. Whilst we all know and love the opening movement, you will have the opportunity to enjoy singing the whole work, including all the solo numbers.
