Howells Requiem
CHAMBER WEEKENDER Three-day format
Friday 30th January to Sunday 1st February 2026
St Barnabas Church, Pimlico, London SW1W 8PF
Directed by Scott Inglis-Kidger
Herbert Howells’ Requiem is one of the most admired works of twentieth-century British choral music; a deeply personal composition written in memory of a friend’s son, later forming the foundation for Hymnus Paradisi. Composed in 1932 but not performed until 1980, when it was premiered by the Choir of King’s College, Cambridge, the work reveals Howells at his most intimate and expressive. This Chamber Weekender offers experienced singers the opportunity to study and perform this remarkable piece in depth under the direction of Scott Inglis-Kidger. Across three days of detailed sessions, participants will explore Howells’ distinctive harmonic language, ensemble precision, and expressive balance. With places strictly limited, the small-group format provides an ideal setting to refine consort singing skills and develop a greater sense of blend, tuning, and communication within the ensemble.
What are these weekends all about?
Our Chamber Weekenders are our most tailored and immersive offering, and are designed to challenge and stimulate experienced choral singers in a chamber setting (14 to 20 people). They are best suited to those who enjoy singing to a high level and feel confident in chamber-sized groups. Therefore diligent preparation and/or solid sight-reading is expected. In this case, we will be singing only 2 or 3 to a part.
