Howells' unaccompanied setting of the Requiem remained, for many years, a closely guarded secret. Having composed the music in 1936 shortly after the tragic death of his son the previous year, Howells did not allow it to be published until 1981. In many respects, the Requiemis unlike much of Howells' work, and there is a unmistakable sense of harking back to the Tudor works of Tallis and Byrd. That said, this is a remarkable and innovative setting, with its use of both Latin and English texts, its textural complexity and its exquisitely crafted harmonic progressions.
