For our final workshop of 2018, we offer a gorgeous array of Christmas motets by the non-related Lutheran composers Hieronymus Praetorius and Michael Praetorius. Hieronymus' Latin setting of the Magnificat is extensive, containing Christmas interpolations in German. Michael's beguiling and simple carol settings are contrasted by his large-scale Puer Natus in Bethlehem. This work is a smaller-forced movement from the publication 'Polyhymnia Caduceatrix et Panegyrica', a collection boasting very large forces: 20 parts, multiple choirs and instruments placed antiphonally!
