PAST WORKSHOPS
BACH JESU, MEINE FREUDE
We open our 2018 series of workshops with Bach’s mega-motet, Jesu, meine Freude, one of a set of motets by Bach which are believed to have been written for performance at the Thomaskirche, Leipzig. There is a possibility that this particular motet was written for the funeral of the wife of the Leipzig postmaster in 1723 – however, recent research has drawn the accuracy of this into doubt.

HOWELLS REQUIEM
Howells' unaccompanied setting of the Requiem remained, for many years, a closely guarded secret. Having composed the music in 1936 shortly after the tragic death of his son the previous year, Howells did not allow it to be published until 1981. In many respects, the Requiem is unlike much of Howells' work, and there is a unmistakable sense of harking back to the Tudor works of Tallis and Byrd. That said, this is a remarkable and innovative setting, with its use of both Latin and English texts, its textural complexity and its exquisitely crafted harmonic progressions.

MONTEVERDI BEATUS VIR
With The Six, a period band of organ, sackbuts and cornetts
'Beatus Vir', and the accompanying motets, are taken from the Selva morale e spirituale (Moral and Spiritual Forest), a collection of Monteverdi's sacred music published in Venice, 1640-41. This collection, published when Monteverdi was 75 years old, was composed for the Basilico di San Marco in Venice, a church of gargantuan proportions. The music encapsulates the transition between Renaissance and Baroque, presenting both the 'stile antico' and the more bass-driven 'stile moderno'. The accompanying sackbuts and cornetts will give us a little taste of Venice on the banks of the River Thames.

HANDEL SOLOMON
Having diverted himself from the composition of Italian opera — due to its dwindling audiences — Handel was enjoying refreshed success with the new oratorio style; a mostly un-staged biblical drama in English. Solomon is one of Handel's most lavish three-act oratorios, with an instrumentation calling for the use of flutes, horns, trumpets and drums, and a great deal of double-choir choruses throughout. Handel responds to the drama of the anonymous libretto, depicting Solomon's marital bliss in Act 1, his profound judgement in Act 2, and the extravagant state visit of the Queen of Sheba in the final act. As always, Handel's music never disappoints with its florid lines sitting perfectly in the voice.

MOZART VESPERS
Written for liturgical use in Salzburg Cathedral in 1780, this vibrant work could be unduly overshadowed by the Great Mass in C minor and the Requiem. Containing one of Mozart's most famous motets 'Laudate Dominum' for solo soprano and choir, these Vespers are bold and colourful in nature. The strict and densely contrapuntal 'Laudate Pueri' is juxtaposed with the more exuberant settings of the first three psalms. The Magnificat brings the Vespers to a fitting close; soloists, chorus and accompaniment combining to great effect.

BLESSED CITY
Join us for this celebration of the Anglican choral tradition, where we explore the glorious cathedral repertoire for choir and organ, most of which was composed for the vast acoustics of Britain's cathedrals and college chapels. These beautiful buildings resound with top-quality music every day, often with very small congregations. Our line-up of composers includes some of the titans of the Anglican repertory. This music is an excellent workout for the voice and a great deal of fun!

BACH MAGNIFICAT
In this, the second of two workshops focusing on the music of J.S. Bach, we explore his Magnificat; undoubtedly one of Bach's most revered works. Composed in 1733 during his tenure as Thomaskantor in Leipzig, the Magnificat was derived from his earlier setting in E flat. The Christmas interpolations found in the older version were removed and the key was amended to D major to suit the trumpets for a performance for the feast of the Visitation on 2nd July 1733. The Magnificat has been set to music more than any other Latin text by composers over the centuries. Come and enjoy Bach's wonderful interpretation.

CECILIA VIRGO
In this workshop we explore a cappella music dedicated to our patron saint of musicians, Saint Cecilia. Mixing ancient and modern has always been at the heart of Platinum's music-making, and this workshop is no exception. We enjoy the perfect polyphony of Guerrero, sitting alongside a harmonically adventurous work by little-known Renaissance composer, Daniel Torquet. Cocooned by the early music, we have two wonderful pieces from composers of the 20th and 21st centuries, both of which display a leaning towards the 16th century polyphonic style.

A LUTHERAN CHRISTMAS
For our final workshop of 2018, we offer a gorgeous array of Christmas motets by the non-related Lutheran composers Hieronymus Praetorius and Michael Praetorius. Hieronymus' Latin setting of the Magnificat is extensive, containing Christmas interpolations in German. Michael's beguiling and simple carol settings are contrasted by his large-scale Puer Natus in Bethlehem. This work is a smaller-forced movement from the publication 'Polyhymnia Caduceatrix et Panegyrica', a collection boasting very large forces: 20 parts, multiple choirs and instruments placed antiphonally!
