2018 EARLY NIGHTS WORKSHOPS
MYSTICAL ROSE
In this season of Early Nights, we will explore the joyful variety of Marian music. The tradition of music honouring the Virgin Mary stretches back through the ages, and Mary, the Mystical Rose, continues to inspire composers today. In our workshops, we will look at music associated with the various feast days of the Virgin Mary: Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary; Immaculate Conception; Candlemas; Visitation of the Virgin Mary; The Annunciation; and The Assumption. Rosa Mystica, or Mystical Rose, is one of many titles given to Mary, who is sometimes depicted with three roses around her breast, representing prayer, penance, and propitiation. Join us as we traverse through the Marian works of a huge variety of composers, including Gesualdo, Palestrina, Hassler and Lassus.

LAMENTATIONS 2018
In this season of Early Nights, we explore musical settings of texts from the Book of Lamentations, a collection of poetic laments for the destruction of Jerusalem. Usually sung during the period of Tenebrae (Darkness), these works are sombre and heavy in tone. The Holy Week liturgy has, over the centuries, provoked some of the most potent and emotional music; this set of Lamentations provides us with a rich and unique musical tapestry to enjoy during the Lenten period. Our last session takes place at the beginning of Holy Week itself, where we enjoy the harmonically torturous music of Carlo Gesualdo.

THE PALESTRINA STYLE
This season we are looking at the music of Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina and his pupils. Known as the father of what would come to be called 'prima pratica', Palestrina inspired a generation of composers with his beautiful, orderly and purposefully uncontroversial word setting and melodic lines. His compositional style was considered so perfect it convinced the Council of Trent that a total ban of polyphony - which was argued to cloud the liturgical texts - was unnecessary. Palestrina continues to inspire composers even now, with his music being used alongside Bach's in compositional pedagogy.

CRIETH IN THE WILDERNESS
'... a solemn Anthem, wherein a sweet melodious treble, or countertenor, singeth single, and the full quire answereth … maketh such a heavenly harmony, as is pleasing unto God and Man.' – Charles Butler speaking on Verse Anthems in ‘Principles of Musik’ (London, 1636). Join us as we explore some of these heavenly harmonies, written in the height of the English Reformation.
