An opera in all but name, Handel's Semele tells the mythological tale of Semele, a mortal beloved by the god Jupiter. Seduced by the promise of divinity, Semele's ambition ultimately leads to her downfall. Encouraged by the jealous Juno, Semele requests to see Jupiter in his divine form, a sight that proves fatal for mortals. Consumed by divine flames, she perishes. The work delves into themes of ambition, love, and the perils of human desires, perfectly displayed by Handel's captivating arias, intricate choruses, and rich orchestration. Join us as we explore the dramatic and thrilling choruses of Semele at our first Flagship Workshop of the year.
