And I saw a new heaven
We explore three compositions which share as their theme the sense of darkness becoming light. Jonathan Dove's Seek Him That Maketh The Seven Stars is a joyful, uplifting setting of Psalm 139. The organ part, with its sparkling use of high registers, subtly evokes the stars, complemented by the carefully sculpted vocal lines. Barber's ecstatic Agnus Dei, adapted from his renowned Adagio for Strings, remains one of the most challenging yet rewarding choral works of all time. Finally, we will enjoy Bainton's Anglican masterwork And I saw a new heaven, with its rich late-Romantic harmonies.
